Oral Exams & Cleanings

Dental Services in Coastal Orange County

Why are oral exams and cleanings important?

Preventative dental care is an essential part of maintaining a healthy smile for a lifetime. At the office of Coastal Orange County dentist, Michael J. Spitzer, DDS, our goal is to provide exceptional dental care to patients of all ages.

We desire to be your first line of defense against oral health problems. To do that, we recommend, along with the American Dental Association, that patients visit the dentist at least once every six months to ensure they take proper care of their teeth and gums. If you are looking for a trusted dentist in Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach or the surrounding Coastal Orange County communities, schedule an appointment with Dr. Spitzer today.

Benefits of a Professional Cleaning

One of the benefits of visiting your dentist at least twice a year for exams & cleanings is that we can prevent problems such as gum disease, tooth decay, infections, and other oral health issues from developing and worsening. If we identify any dental or oral health concerns during your exam, our dentists will make appropriate recommendations and discuss the options to determine a treatment plan that will allow you to enjoy optimal oral and dental health for a lifetime.

About Oral Exams

Regular oral health exams allow Dr. Spitzer to detect early signs of decay and gum disease and prevent serious dental problems from developing. Dr. Spitzer will use a small mirror to see your teeth from different angles, looking for any issues that must be addressed. Then, the dentist will evaluate your tooth decay and gum disease risk and check that your bite and jaw are properly aligned.

Regular oral exams are very important to ensure that you take care of any decay early before it becomes a larger problem. Letting cavities or gum disease remain untreated can lead to painful or expensive dental procedures in the future.

Maintaining the habit of seeing the dentist for an
oral exam every six months can ensure your teeth stay healthy.

About Dental Cleanings

What to Expect at Your Dental Cleaning?

After the oral exam, the dental hygienist will clean your teeth to remove bacteria, plaque and tartar. The dental hygienist will do this using a tool called a scaler to clean around the gum line
and between the teeth. This may take longer if you have not kept regular oral appointments and the tartar has built up on the teeth.

Once the teeth are tartare-free, the hygienist will use a high-powered electric toothbrush to brush and polish the teeth. A professional-grade graffiti toothpaste will gently scrub the teeth to remove and polish surface stains.

After the teeth are polished, the hygienist will remove the final traces of plaque and tartar by flossing the teeth. This is an opportunity for the dental professional to deep clean the teeth and look again for any signs of tooth problems.

The last step in the cleaning process is a rinse to remove any debris left from the cleaning process. The hygienist will finish with a fluoride rinse, strengthening the tooth enamel and
protecting the teeth against decay for the next several months.
