Dental Implants

About Dental Implants

For people experiencing difficulties because of missing teeth, dental implants are an ideal solution. Dental implants replace the natural tooth root with an artificial root, usually made of titanium, and provide a secure base for replacement teeth. Implants are increasingly popular among patients who suffer with severe and chronic dental problems. As an alternative to dentures, dental implants are a durable, long-term solution that restores both the look and function of your mouth and smile.

Dental implants truly look and function similar to natural teeth. The titanium fixture that the implants are grounded in actually fuses to the bone in the jaw, which makes the implants incredibly secure and provides worry-free eating, talking and smiling. According to recent studies, dental implants are designed to and often do last a lifetime.

Who Can Get Dental Implants

Dental implants can replace single or multiple teeth and may be the ideal treatment option for any patient looking for a natural-looking tooth replacement solution.

However, if you are not in good health, have periodontal disease, or do not have enough bone mass in your jaw to support the implants, other prerequisite procedures or treatments may be necessary for implant placement. In cases where the jawbone density is insufficient, a procedure called a bone graft may be required in order to build up the supporting bone structure and move forward with the implants in the future.

Process for Dental Implants

Whether a patient is receiving a single or multi-tooth implants, such as implant-supported bridge or full-mouth reconstruction, the process for dental implants begins with an evaluation of your health. Before recommending any tooth replacement solution, Dr. Spitzer performs a detailed dental exam combined with a thorough review of medical history and records. The entire implant process then involves several procedures over time:

  • Extraction of damaged teeth and preparation for implant placement

  • Surgical placement of the implant(s)

  • Bone growth and healing

  • Attachment of the abutment

  • Placement of the crown (artificial tooth), bridge or final restoration(s)

Dr. Spitzer will plan sufficient time between procedures for recovery and healing for your jawbone. Depending on the unique needs of each patient and the extent of treatment performed, the whole process can often take months, especially if bone grafting is required in order to receive the implant(s).
